The development of properties at the St. Armand’s Key in Florida has a rich and colorful history tied with the famed Ringling Circus. This is one trivia that can spur much interest to those keen on acquiring homes in this barrier island on the west coast of Florida. Fronting the Sarasota Bay and the azure Gulf of Mexico waters, the community at the Ringling Estates/St. Armand’s property started taking shape in earnest as early as 1925. This was when a causeway was built using Ringling circus hands laboring in their off season to link the key with the mainland of Sarasota County.

St. Armand’s Key consists of about 130 acres and was formerly a homestead owned by a Frenchman pioneer, Charles St. Amand. His surname was misspelled to St. Armand in land deeds, and that name stuck to this day. The circus wiz John Ringling acquired the property in 1917, and from the outset, he envisioned the property development to include a residential district radiating around a shopping center. With the completion of the causeway in 1926, the Ringling Estates/St. Armand’s properties hit the market with encouraging sales of more than $1 million on the first day of its opening.

However, an economic downturn in the ensuing years highlighted by the Great Depression adversely affected the growth of investor interest in the property development. It was only in the mid-1950s that the property again began to attract significant attention from investors in St. Armand’s Key real estate, including both home buyers and commercial entrepreneurs.

Currently, Ringling Estates/St. Armand’s homes for sale still draw much of their market strength from the vision of its founding father. The shopping center has become a huge success so much so that it has become a magnet not only for St. Armand’s Key real estate investors. It has also helped attract home buyers in its outlying districts including the City of Sarasota.

Sales-listed residences at Ringling Estates/St. Armand’s can include homes upgraded from their original 1950s structures. One such option can have a starting price in the low $500s and feature a floor plan of 1,500 square feet. Residences of more recent vintage and floor areas of 3,000 square feet up to more than 6,000 square feet can have tag prices from around $1.3 million to $5.9 million.

Besides their proximity to a chic shopping haven which likewise teems with fine dining places, these homes are right next to Lido Key’s famous sand beaches. Various cultural events are also held regularly at the neighboring Longboat Key Center for the Arts.
